Cleverley was hurt during last weekend's 0-0 draw at Everton after a clash with Marouane Fellaini and there were fears he had cracked a rib.
Latics boss Roberto Martinez was worried that the England Under 21 international had played the last game of his loan spell from Manchester United due to the injury.
However, scans have shown there is no crack and Martinez is optimistic Cleverley will be in contention for Saturday's visit of Villa.
"He's had an X-ray and there is no fracture, just bruising to the rib," Martinez told the Wigan Evening Post.
"It's obviously still sore and painful but we're hoping Tom will react well to treatment and he should be in contention for the weekend.
"We'll have a better idea at the end of the week but it's not the bad news we all feared.
"Knowing Tom and the way he always wants to be available, I would say he'll be available for selection."
Reflecting on the incident, Cleverley said: "About five minutes before half-time, Fellaini clattered me and I was just struggling to catch my breath after that.
"He's a big lad and when he catches you, you know about it."
