Sunderland 2 - 0 Stoke City

Record-signing Asamoah Gyan paid off a sizeable instalment of his £13 million-plus fee with a match-winning double for Sunderland against 10-man Stoke.

The Ghana international struck after nine minutes and, after Steed Malbranque had missed a first-half penalty, added a second four minutes from time to help ease the pain of last weekend's 5-1 humiliation by Newcastle.

Manchester United 2 - 1 Wolverhampton Wanderers

Park Ji-sung struck a stoppage time winner to give Sir Alex Ferguson a perfect 24th anniversary present as Manchester United manager.

It was perhaps a fitting way for Ferguson to celebrate his milestone given the number of times his side have snatched victory in such a manner.

Mick McCarthy will not be the last manager to thrash about in frustration after United old-boy Sylvan Ebanks-Blake had looked to have snatched a deserved point for his team, cancelling out Park's opener in the first half.

Fulham 1 - 1 Aston Villa

Fulham centre-half Brede Hangeland earned Fulham a point with a last-gasp equaliser at Craven Cottage.

Marc Albrighton's 42nd-minute strike looked to have given Aston Villa a vital win when he latched on to a sensational cross-field pass from Barry Bannan to finish in style.

Blackpool 2 - 2 Everton

Blackpool's Marlon Harewood was denied a late winner as the Barclays Premier League newcomers fought out a thrilling draw with Everton today.

The Seasiders substitute put the ball in the net in the closing minutes at Bloomfield Road but was frustrated by a controversial offside flag.

Blackpool twice led an end-to-end encounter after goals from Wales pair Neal Eardley and David Vaughan but Everton hit back through Tim Cahill and former Blackpool loanee Seamus Coleman.

Blackburn Rovers 2 - 1 Wigan Athletic

Blackburn substitute Jason Roberts atoned for the error which had cost his side dear against Chelsea last weekend with a cool 66th-minute finish to seal the points at Ewood Park.

Roberts had missed a sitter against the champions but kept his nerve to supply a superb first-time finish to Brett Emerton's cross and wrap up victory.

Morten Gamst Pedersen had put Rovers in front eight minutes earlier when his free-kick from the byline eluded everyone in the box and curled into the top corner.

Birmingham 2 - 2 West Ham United

Former Birmingham co-owner David Sullivan was denied victory on his return to St Andrews as his current club West Ham surrendered a two-goal lead.

The bottom-placed Hammers looked set for a first away success of the campaign after Frederic Piquionne and Valon Behrami had put them in command.

But City substitute Cameron Jerome and Liam Ridgewell salvaged a point for Alex McLeish's side.

Bolton Wanderers 4 - 2 Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham, conquerors of Champions League holders Inter Milan in midweek, had to settle for second best at the Reebok Stadium despite a rousing comeback.

Trailing 3-0 they scored twice in the last 11 minutes thanks to Alan Hutton and substitute Roman Pavlyuchenko.

However Martin Petrov stepped off the bench to seal Bolton's victory in stoppage time with a fine solo effort.

Liverpool 3 - 1 Napoli

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard came to his side's aid once again as his late hat-trick inspired the side to a 3-1 Europa League victory against Napoli which highlighted the gulf in class within the squad.

The Reds were deservedly behind to Ezequiel Lavezzi's goal after a dire first-half performance but the England midfielder's introduction at the interval changed the dynamic.

Lech Poznan 3 - 1 Manchester City

Two late goals from Lech Poznan condemned faltering Manchester City to a third straight defeat - 3-1 - and increased the pressure on manager Roberto Mancini.

With the scores locked at 1-1 following efforts from Dimitrije Injac and Emmanuel Adebayor, City's Europa League Group A rivals struck twice in the last five minutes to take the points.

Preview: Lech Poznan v Manchester City

Jose Maria Bakero will take charge of his first game as Lech Poznan coach against big-spending Manchester City in the Europa League on Thursday.

Bakero takes over after Jacek Zielinski was sacked earlier this week due to disappointing results in the Polish league.

Preview: Liverpool v Napoli

Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson has pledged to field a strong team in Thursday's Europa League clash at home to Napoli as he seeks to take a major step towards qualification for the knockout stages.

The 63-year-old believes four points from their remaining three games - two of which are at home - will be enough for his Group K leaders.

Newcastle's Tiote hopes to follow in Essien's footsteps

The 24-year-old has had an impressive start to life in the English Premier League with newcomers Newcastle United.

Tiote has been compared to fellow midfielder Essien who plays for Chelsea, and it's a comparison he is keen to live up to.

"Obviously I'm only young but to be compared to Essien is quite a compliment," he told the club's official website, http://www.nufc.co.uk/.

Bale making name as Europe's most exciting player

PARIS — A shade over two months ago, in a packed auditorium in Monaco, Sisenando Maicon Douglas known simply as Maicon by the opponents who fear him beamed with pride as he was presented with a ball-shaped silver trophy for being the best defender in European club football for 2010.

Bursaspor 0 - 3 Manchester United

Manchester United shrugged off the loss of star man Nani to claim a very impressive Champions League win over Bursaspor.

Second-half goals from Darren Fletcher, Gabriel Obertan and Bebe extended United's unbeaten record in all competitions to 23 and ensured they only require a draw against Rangers at Ibrox on November 24 to claim their customary place in the knockout phase with a game to spare.

AP
And, as Nani is already rated doubtful to face Wolves on Saturday after limping off with a groin injury midway through the opening period, Sir Alex Ferguson must have been delighted that two of his back-up wide-men followed up Fletcher's opener - only his second Champions League goal in his 50th appearance in the competition - to seal a comfortable win.

Tottenham Hotspur 3 - 1 Internazionale

Tottenham tonight completed their remarkable renaissance as a European force by producing a stunning display of attacking football to beat Champions League holders Inter Milan.

On a glory, glory night arguably not witnessed at White Hart Lane since Spurs last rubbed shoulders with the game's elite almost half a century earlier, Harry Redknapp's side were simply irresistible.

Their win was enough to take them above Inter on goal difference at the top of Group A and put them on the verge of qualifying for the knockout phase.

PA PHOTOS
In what was a typically-breathless game, Tottenham were magnificent to a man, but Gareth Bale once again stole the show with another jaw-dropping performance less than a fortnight on from his stunning San Siro hat-trick.

So badly did he humiliate the so-called best right-back in the world tonight that, long before the end, the home fans were singing: "Taxi for Maicon!''

Cesc Fabregas will miss Arsenal's Champions League clash with Shakhtar Donetsk because of a hamstring injury.

Fabregas was inspirational upon his return in the 5-1 thrashing of Shakhtar in the first leg but tweaked his hamstring in the 1-0 win over West Ham at the weekend. Now he will not travel with the squad to Ukraine but manager Arsene Wenger is hopeful he will be able to face Newcastle on Sunday.

Florent Malouda will miss Chelsea's Champions League clash with Spartak Moscow on Wednesday after picking up an ankle injury in his side's 2-1 Premier League victory over Blackurn.

Blackpool 2 - 1 West Bromwich Albion

Blackpool claimed their first home Premier League win with a 2-1 victory over promoted rivals West Brom, who were reduced to nine men in the opening half hour.

Charlie Adam scored from the penalty spot after Baggies defender Pablo Ibanez was harshly sent off as the last man after just 11 minutes.

Getty Images
The away side's task became even harder when Gonzalo Jara also saw red after 29 minutes, following a ludicrous two-footed challenge on Luke Varney, who scored his side's second on the hour mark.

It proved the decisive strike as Yousouf Mulumbu pulled a goal back and set up a nervy final five minutes during which Paul Scharner and Steven Reid both almost nicked what would have been a barely believable point for the visitors.

Man Utd's Rio Ferdinand to miss Bursaspor match

LODNON (AFP) - Manchester United headed out to Turkey on Champions League duty on Monday without central defender Rio Ferdinand.

There was no immediate word on why Ferdinand was not in the 20-strong squad, but manager Alex Ferguson is known to be eager to rest the player who has long-standing back problems which can be brought on by long flights.

Tottenham to look to Bale against Inter

By STEVE DOUGLAS, AP Sports Writer

LONDON (AP)—Inter Milan will be wary of in-form Tottenham winger Gareth Bale when it travels to White Hart Lane looking to seal qualification to the knockout stage of the Champions League.

Inter Milan... Let's take a closer look. Players and bios.

Goalkeeper-- Soares de Espindola Julio Cesar-- Rio De Janeiro, Brazil-- Getting past the Inter defence is tough enough, let alone getting past Julio Cesar. The Brazil number one has risen to prominence in recent years, becoming one of the world's top shotstoppers thanks to his feline-like reflexes and self-assurance between the sticks. Well established as Brazil's number one goalkeeper, he saved two penalties in the 2004 Copa America final shoot-out. He has since represented his country at the 2006 and 2010 World Cups, and the 2009 Intercontinental Cup. At Inter since July 2005, Julio Cesar spent six months at Chievo acclimatizing to Italian football after six and a half years with Flamengo.

Bolton Wanderers 0 - 1 Liverpool

Maxi Rodriguez struck a late winner at Bolton as relieved Liverpool finally climbed out of the Barclays Premier League relegation zone.

The Argentinian latched onto a brilliant Fernando Torres backheel to settle a competitive encounter at the Reebok Stadium four minutes from time.

Both sides created numerous chances in an evenly-matched contest but Liverpool left satisfied knowing their near month-long stay in the bottom three was over.

Newcastle United 5 - 1 Sunderland

Captain Kevin Nolan plundered a derby hat-trick to hand manager Chris Hughton the perfect ending to an eventful week as Newcastle routed Sunderland.

The midfielder put the home side 2-0 ahead within 34 minutes and completed his treble 15 minutes from time, after striker Shola Ameobi had helped himself to two goals, the first of them from the penalty spot.

It was the first hat-trick in the fixture since Peter Beardsley achieved the feat for Newcastle in January 1985.

Aston Villa 0 - 0 Birmingham

Birmingham were on the wrong end of more penalty controversy as they earned a share of the spoils in the derby clash at Aston Villa.

Alex McLeish's side had been beaten by a controversial spot-kick in the corresponding fixture last season.
This time Villa skipper Nigel Reo-Coker appeared to control the ball with his arm inside the box just before half-time - but the visitors' penalty appeals were rejected by referee Howard Webb.

Birmingham had the consolation of ending a run of six successive defeats against their local rivals.
But this was a game lacking in quality and will not remain long in the memory.

Manchester United 2 - 0 Tottenham Hotspur

A controversial late goal from Nani and a first-half header by Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic ensured Tottenham's 21-year wait for victory at Old Trafford continued.

United captain Vidic opened the scoring with a header after 31 pulsating minutes before Nani reacted quickest to some goalmouth confusion to prod home five minutes from time.

Spurs were furious with referee Mark Clattenburg for allowing the second goal, scored after goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes placed what he believed to be a dead ball.
