Rooney to miss Champions League match versus Valencia

Wayne Rooney will not travel with the Manchester United squad for the Champions League match against Valencia on Wednesday due to an ankle injury, the club have confirmed on their official website.

Rooney picked up the injury in Sunday's 2-2 draw at Bolton and was substituted in the 61st minute and, although it is not thought to be serious, the striker will miss the clash with top-of-La-Liga Los Che.

The England striker's form has been the subject of criticism of late, as his performances on the pitch have suffered since allegations surrounding his personal life appeared in the media.

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson will turn to Bulgarian Dimitar Berbatov, who has lit up the Premier League thus far this season with six goals in six games, and may also turn to Michael Owen, who returned to the side to save a point against Bolton.

There has been no indication whether Rooney's absence will be any longer than one game, which would threaten his participation in Saturday's Premier League encounter with Sunderland at the Stadium of Light, plus England's Euro 2012 qualifier with Montenegro on October 12.
