• Chelsea lost for the second successive Premier League game at Birmingham, the first time the Blues have lost twoleague matches in a row since May 2006.
• The English champions have failed to score in four of their last five away league matches. Chelsea have also drawn a blank in five of their last nine league games; in the previous nine, they managed 39 goals.
• Fifteen of Chelsea's 28 league goals this season have come in the final 15 minutes of each half.
• Chelsea's seven-match unbeaten run in all competitions, which included six wins, ended with a 2-0 defeat at Liverpool FC on 7 November. Although they beat Fulham FC at home three days later, on 14 November Sunderland AFC were 3-0 winners at Stamford Bridge.

• Chelsea went 671 minutes without conceding in the league between Gareth Bale's effort in the 2-1 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur FC on 17 April and Scott Parker's late consolation for West Ham United FC on 11 September. They scored 35 times in-between – a Premier League record.

• John Terry has not played since the win against Fulham due to a back problem.
• Alex started against Birmingham despite Chelsea announcing on 16 November that he required knee surgery and would be out for eight weeks.
• Ashley Cole sat out England's friendly against France due to an ankle injury but returned against Birmingham. Yuri Zhirkov was missing after picking up a calf muscle strain in Russia's friendly defeat by Belgium.
• Frank Lampard has been out since a hernia operation at the end of August. He was close to a return before suffering an adductor injury in training on 11 November.
• Before coming on as a late substitute at Aston Villa on 16 October, José Bosingwa had not featured since suffering a knee injury against the same opponents on 17 October 2009.
