Bolton appeal against Cahill's Arsenal dismissal

Bolton Wanderers have appealed against the red card shown to Gary Cahill in Saturday's game against Arsenal on the basis of "wrongful dismissal."  More after the jump..

Cahill was dismissed at Emirates Stadium after challenging  Marouane Chamakh from behind on the touchline. Bolton were incensed by the decision, particularly as Alex Song appeared to have fouled Lee Chung-Yong just seconds before.

Referee Stuart Attwell did not punish the Arsenal player but he did take a dim view of Cahill's challenge on Arsenal's Moroccan striker after 64 minutes.

Manager Owen Coyle said in his post-match press conference: "Lee was very close to the penalty box. It should have been a free kick, and it is not given. From the resulting pass Gary Cahill went into the back of the lad and fouled him. I don't think it merited a red."

Despite running the risk of the Football Association extending his three-match ban on the grounds of a "frivolous appeal", Bolton have asked the governing body to take another look at the incident.

"The FA has received a claim for wrongful dismissal from Bolton Wanderers' defender Gary Cahill," read an FA statement. "Cahill was shown a red card during Bolton's match against Arsenal on 11 September. A Regulatory Commission will consider the claim on Tuesday 14 September."
