Andy Carroll accused of assault.

NEWCASTLE, England (AP)—Newcastle forward Andy Carroll has been ordered by a court to stay at the family home of club captain Kevin Nolan until January after being charged with assaulting a former girlfriend.

The England under-21 international appeared before Tynedale Magistrates Court in Northumberland on Monday, accused of assaulting Laurie Henderson at her home sometime after 4.30am local time on Sunday.

The case was adjourned until Jan. 10. The court heard Carroll will deny the offense and claim self-defense.

The 21-year-old Carroll, who gave his address as a Newcastle hotel, was granted bail but has to live at Nolan’s family home in Ponteland, Northumberland until Jan. 10, apart from nights when Newcastle is playing.

Carroll has started the season well, scoring four goals in Newcastle’s opening eight matches.
