Blackpool and Everton home games postponed

Blackpool's game against Liverpool on Boxing Day has been postponed due to a frozen pitch. And Everton's home match against Birmingham City has also been called off.

Blackpool do not have undersoil heating at Bloomfield Road and despite covering the pitch the surface is not playable. The inspection was due to take place at midday but was brought forward due to overnight temperatures. The game has already been rearranged for Wednesday, January 12 at 8pm.

The game at Goodison Park was postponed due to a frozen water supply. A statement on Everton's website read: "Due to the adverse weather conditions in Liverpool overnight the stadium is not in a fit condition to stage a Premier League football match, one of which would have attracted an almost capacity attendance.

"There are several miles of frozen pipes, many of which burst during the course of Christmas Day night.

"Our stadium and safety teams worked 'round the clock but due to the rapidly deteriorating conditions - and in the interests of safety and hygiene we have reluctantly taken the decision to postpone the game.

"A new date for the fixture will be announced as soon as possible."

The early Premier League kick-off between Fulham and West Ham United definitely goes ahead.

Wolves' game against Wigan ill also go ahead despite similar water problems. A statement on the club's website read: "Staff have been working around the clock on making sure the stands and surrounding areas are cleared of snow and gritted to try and ensure fans are able to enjoy the traditions of enjoying a football match on Boxing Day.

"But unfortunately there will be inconvenience for certain sections of supporters with currently no water supply in the Stan Cullis Stand and upper tier of the Steve Bull Stand due to frozen pipes. Wolves are doing everything they can to minimise the disruption but fans are encouraged to bring flasks of hot drink if required.

"It is also worth stressing that some pavements around Molineux do remain snow-covered and fans of both sides are urged to take extra care on the approaches to the stadium. Supporters are also advised that the Terrace Bar will be closed for today's game."

The festive footbal programme in England looks set to be decimated, with many games in the Football League falling to the coldest winter for 50 years.
