Dimitar Berbatov

Dimitar Berbatov has been a controversial figure for Manchester United since his transfer from Tottenham to become a member of the Red Devils in 2008.  The United support has never been entirely convinced of Berbatov's value, with his languid style not really endearing him to the fans since his club record £30.75 million move from Spurs.

As early as his first years in the German Bundesliga, it has been clear that Berbatov is a special player.  He was a goal scoring machine scoring 16, 25, and 21 goals in his final three years in the Bundesliga.  He was then moved over to White Hart Lane to play for the Spurs.  He scored a remarkable 23 and 22 goals for the Spurs in his two seasons there.

Even with Man U, he has scored 14 and 12 goals in the last two seasons, that is not enough for the Red Devil's fans.  He was somewhat labeled a bust with fans saying that he should easily be able to duplicate the Bundesliga and Tottenham performances with the quality that Man U puts on the pitch.

Maybe this is the year that he put it all together.  He scored in the 4-1 rout over Chelsea to win the Community Shield and has been the player that everyone expected Rooney to be this year.  He has taken the mantle for the time being from Rooney with 6 goals in 5 games along with the goal of the season so far, a half bicycle kick that hit the post and went in versus hated rival Liverpool.  It was part of his hat trick allowing Berbatov to bocame the first United player since Stan Pearson in 1946 to score three against old rivals Liverpool in the 3-2 victory at Old Trafford.

If this year is the year that Man United put up the fight to the end versus Chelsea, they need their Bulgarian sharpshooter to keep playing like he has.
