Panic by Aston Villa

In what is turning into a complete desperation move, the fee in the end for former Sunderland striker Darren Bent will be in the range of 40 million pounds.

Lets look at the positives and negatives of the move for Villa and Sunderland.

Positives:

  • Sunderland has made a lot of money to shore up problems in other areas of the field with multiple players.  Almost like trading a striker for 2 defenders and 2 midfielders.
  • Aston Villa has a stone cold scorer.  At Sunderland, Bent has been a goal scoring machine being in the top 5 in scoring the last two years.
  • Sunderland gets rid of its head case.  Manager Steve Bruce has openly questioned Bent's commitment and has all but went out and called Bent a head case and a problem for the squad.
  • Aston Villa becomes unlikely to be relegated.  Aston Villa has been on the edge of relegation all season long but with a big move like this, there is scoring power and just enough defense to keep them comfortably in the safe zone.
Negatives:
  • Sunderland relying on an unknown property.  Can Gyan handle being the go to guy for an EPL squad seeing the best defenders and everyone looking to shut him down.  He hasn't exactly set the world on fire in his previous endeavours.
  • $40 million?  That is a lot of money and pressure to make things happen for Bent and Villa.  Can Bent come through and make that money even look like a reasonable fee.
  • The price for everyone has risen.  Other clubs will look at the exorbitant amount of money Bent was transferred for and expect similar compensations for their players.  Imagine the transfer fee for Rooney if he were in the open market.

Overall Opinion:
  • If he can score the goals to keep Villa out of relegation and maybe even move them to a possible top ten finish, he more than makes up for the fee.  Villa doesnt have a real chance at a top 5 finish so with looking towards the future and making sure relegation is avoided, this was the best move for all parties involved.
