Transfer news 1/20/11
08.05: Good morning everyone, and welcome to our latest instalment of the rolling transfer blog. Bent, Pienaar and Edin Dzeko aside, this has been a bit of a barren January, but let's hope for some fresh developments today.
08.33: The Independent's Sam Wallace leads the way this morning with his report that Spurs could be poised to make an offer for former Manchester United forward Giuseppe Rossi, who has been in excellent form for Villarreal this season. The paper also reports that Liverpool and Ajax are £8 million apart in their valuation of Luis Suarez, which is a fairly big obstacle to overcome.
The other story catching our eye this morning comes courtesy of the Daily Mirror, who report that Monaco could be interested in luring former striker Emmanuel Adebayor back to the club. How the 'mighty' have fallen eh? It appears Manchester City have no place for the striker.
The Daily Mail don't let us down this morning, reporting that Chelsea will turn to Manchester City's Joleon Lescott if they cannot agree a deal for Benfica's £26 million-rated defender David Luiz. Meanwhile, Liverpool could loan Paul Konchesky back to Fulham and Aston Villa have upped their offer for Charlie Adam to £4 million.
Finally, the Daily Express details how Sunderland's interest in Roman Pavlyuchenko has fallen through as Spurs are determined to recoup the £13.8 million they paid for the Russian striker.
09.01: BREAKING NEWS: Everton announce that Victor Anichebe and Seamus Coleman have both signed new contracts at Goodison Park.
09.05: Boca Juniors star Juan Roman Riquelme to Blackburn? Eh? According to an agent close to the club, it could well happen in January. Given he struggled to settle in Spain, we aren't sure a move to Lancashire is really on the agenda for the playmaker in all honesty.
09.37: BREAKING NEWS: Bolton confirm the signing of Middlesbrough defender David Wheater. Will this pave the way for Gary Cahill to leave the club?
09.48: Manchester City’s spending spree is showing no sign of ending and despite having Micah Richards, Pablo Zabaleta and Jerome Boateng on their books, Dutch paper De Telegraaf reports a club delegation watched Ajax right-back Gregory van der Wiel in action against Feyenoord on Wednesday.
10.02: L’Equipe reports that Fulham could be closing in on the loan signing of Chelsea youngster Gael Kakuta, who has had sporadic chances to impress in Carlo Ancelotti’s first XI this season. It would be nice and easy to move down the road, so this one seems a goer.
10.47: Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish says he has had productive talks with the club’s owners regarding transfer targets, although he would not speak directly about Ajax forward Luis Suarez despite talks continuing between the two clubs. “They are good people and we had a positive meeting with John and Tom," Dalglish said. "We discussed many things, one was obviously transfers. We are not going to give names or talk about sums of money.”
10.56: BREAKING NEWS: It is reported that Wolves have signed Barnsley winger Adam Hammill on a deal until 2014. The former Liverpool youngster had a £500,000 release clause in his contract.
11.15: Here’s one we missed earlier from the newspapers: the Daily Telegraph claims Manchester United are planning for the possible loss of Patrice Evra by targeting Benfica’s Fabio Coentrao and Everton’s Leighton Baines. Are they of the required standard at Old Trafford?
11.52: Harry Harris has learned that Chelsea's fear of UEFA's Financial Fair Play regulations has left them reluctant to push the boat out for Benfica defender David Luiz.
11.57: Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has conceded he is interested in Anderlecht teenager Romelu Lukaku, who is wanted by just about every club in Europe, but says nothing will happen in the immediate future. More here.
12.17: Wigan chairman Dave Whelan says the club have not received any offers for Sunderland target Charles N’Zogbia. “I’ve always said to Charles if a top-six club comes in for him, he can speak with them,” Whelan told the Manchester Evening News. “We’ll never stand in a player’s way. We don’t want to sell him, we’ve no plans to sell him and we haven’t received any offers at this stage."
12.47: Sky Sports News reports that Villa striker John Carew, who has a difficult relationship with Ged Houllier, is in talks with Stoke.
13.17: He's apparently talking to Stoke, but reports in Norway suggest John Carew could be heading to Sunderland. Verdens Gang says the Villa striker could be arriving as a replacement for £24 million man Darren Bent.
