It was another frustrating first half for Tottenham after Raphael Van Der Vaart missed a penalty that could have given them a 1-0 lead going into the second half versus Twente. Manager Harry Redknapp must have given them the "win one for the gipper speech" because they came out on fire scoring 2 goals in the first 5 minutes after break.
Van Der Vaart atoned for his missed penalty with a goal one minute into the second half and was followed by Roman Pavlyuchenko scoring a penalty as a result of dynamo Gareth Bale being taken down in the penalty area. Twente responded with Nacer Chadli scoring off of a set piece bring the games back to 2-1. Just 10 minutes later, Pavlyuchenko got another penalty attempt as a result of a handball from one of his shots. He calmly put that one in the net giving the hosts a 3-1 lead.
After helping his teammates get scoring chances all game long, Bale decided to get a little greedy and score one of his own. The 21 year old put one in the bottom left corner in the 85th minute to close out the scoring and give the Spurs a convincing 4-1 lead and put them on top of the table in a tie with defending champs Inter.
The next match for Tottenham is the first match up with Inter in what should be must see television. Both teams have struggled in domestic action to start the season, but hope to use this show of class to boost their seasons in their leagues.
Notes: Van Der Vaart accumulated 2 yellow cards resulting in him being ejected from the game.
Scoring Summary:
